What can I do about depression?
Depression is a very serious health condition. Depression is rampant in these uncertain times that we live in. Please know that we do not claim to be any type of physician, only that we know the "Great Physician". All advice taken from here should be approved by your own physician. So, as a foundation, let's take a look at what the Bible has to say in regards to our lives:
Hebrews 4:15-16 "For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need."
1 Corinthians 10:13 "No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it."
1 John 4:9-10 "This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins."
Now that we have a Biblical foundation, let's make a list (you might even come up with more than these) of the things God has done for us in our lives:
1. He created you
2. He protects you (Satan wants you dead, period)
3. He sent His Son, Jesus, to die for you so that you don't have to die the death of eternity
4. He has given you the gift of the Holy Spirit by way of your conscience to guide you in life's decisions.
5. He has given you great gifts! Gifts like faith, salvation, forgiveness, obedience, and perfection. He has freely given those to you.
6. He allows you to speak directly to Him. He hears your prayers.
7. You have been given a measure of faith (Romans 12:3) and that faith is strengthened by spending time in His word. (John 17:17)
I don’t know what has happened to you in your life. It may be some of the worst things that could ever happen to a person. I want to give you the hope that if you can look to Christ, He'll help you to overcome anything besetting you right now. Don’t look to people. We are all sinful and can’t show you the perfect love that you need right now. The only place you can receive that kind of love is from the One who died for you. Because of His death, our sins are all forgiven, that is, it has already happened. Forgiveness came at the cross when He died. All we have to do is accept the gift of His forgiveness. Please know that He does love you. He cries when you cry and laughs when you laugh. Seeking Christ will vanquish the control that Satan has in your life. Jesus will build a hedge around you that Satan cannot penetrate.
When we are depressed we don’t have the faith to believe that whatever is going on in our lives right now will work out for the best. But as we spend time in His word, our faith increases as we realize that God is in control and will only allow that which is for our best.
